Suggestions and recommendations
There are a number of formulas used when making suggestions. Here are some of the most common:
Formula
Pronoun + recommend/suggest + pronoun (who are you recommending to) + to + verb in simple form + complement.
·         Why don't you / we go to the movies tonight?
·         You / we could visit New York while you're / we're there.
·         Let's go to the travel agent's this afternoon to book our ticket.
·         What about asking your brother for help?
·         How about going to Hawaii for your vacation?
·         I suggest you / we take all the factors into consideration before we decide.
Examples:
I suggest you to buy a new car.
I recommend you to visit the new mexican restaurant.

Writing a report
Reports are documents which present focused, salient content to a specific audience. Reports are often used to display the result of an experiment, investigation, or inquiry.
Report writing is an essential skill for professionals and students. A report aims to inform, as clearly and succinctly as possible.
A report is similar to an essay in that both need:
  • formal style
  • introduction, body and conclusion
  • analytical thinking
  • careful proof-reading and neat presentation

A report differs from an essay in that a report:
  • presents information, not an argument
  • is meant to be scanned quickly by the reader
  • uses numbered headings and sub-headings
  • uses short, concise paragraphs and dot-points where applicable
  • uses graphics wherever possible (tables, graphs, illustrations)
  • may need an abstract (sometimes called an executive summary)
  • does not always need references and bibliography
  • is often followed by recommendations and/or appendices

A report should generally include the following sections.
  • Letter of transmittal
  • Title page
  • Table of contents
  • List of abbreviations and/or glossary
  • Executive summary/abstract
  • Introduction
  • Body
  • Conclusion
  • Recommendations
  • Bibliography
  • Appendices

Presentation and style are important. First impressions count, so consider these simple tips:
  • use plenty of white space
  • ensure the separate parts of your report stand out clearly
  • use subheadings
  • Allow generous spacing between the elements of your report
  • Use dot points/ numbers/ letters to articulate these elements
  • Use tables and figures (graphs, illustrations, maps etc) for clarification.
  • number each page
  • use consistent and appropriate formatting
  • use formal language

Avoid these:
  • the inclusion of careless, inaccurate, or conflicting data
  • the inclusion of outdated or irrelevant data
  • facts and opinions that are not separated
  • unsupported conclusions and recommendations
  • careless presentation and proof-reading
  • Too much emphasis on appearance and not enough on content.
Here, there is an example:

Present and past participle
A clause with an active verb form can be shortened to a modifying phrase by replacing that + verb with the present participle verb form verb+ing.
A clause with a passive verb form can be shortened to a modifying phrase by replacing that + verb with the past participle verb form verb+ed.
The forms –ing and –ed can be used:
·         Combined with other words to make participle clauses.
·         After nouns to make reduced relative clauses.
·         After conjunctions and prepositions.
Here, there are some examples:
Anyone who makes too much noise can be asked to leave.
Anyone making too much noise can be asked to leave.
After they had closed all the windows they turn the heater on.
After closing all the windows they turn the heater on.
When you ski you should keep your knees bent.
When skiing you should keep your knees bent.
Alternative to relative clauses

The rule is that if the relative pronoun refers back to the subject of the sentence, it may not be omitted, but if it refers back to the object, it may.

There is one exception to the above rule: if placing the relative clause right after "its" noun in this way would leave the verb in the main clause dangling at the end of the sentence by itself, the resulting sentence would be awkward to comprehend. In such cases, the verb is usually moved in front of the relative clause.

The man who is wearing the glasses looked at me.
The man wearing the glasses looked at me

The house that is on the corner is mine
The house on the corner is mine.
A relative pronoun that, who, which + be  (is, are, was, were...) can be deleted from a modifiying clause to shorten it to a participial phrase.
  • active verbs – change to a modifier ending in -ING   (present participle form)
  • passive verbs – change to a modifier ending in -ED (past participle form)
There is an exception
The tense of be is needed to make sense.
The London Bridge [that was] located in England is now in Arizona.
The London Bridge  located in England is now in Arizona.   (It is not clear that the bridge was relocated or rebuilt in a new place.)

The phrase still makes sense without the be verb.
The London Bridge  [that is] located in Arizona used to be in England
Dealing with stressful situations
Stress is a physiological reaction of the body which involve a range of defense mechanisms to deal with a situation perceived as threatening or increased demand
Nowadays, stress is so common in our life, because of all the activities that we have to do every day. Stress can have a lot of bad consequence, so we have to be careful. I found 15 tips to avoid or fight against stress:
-Techniques of breathing, inhaling and exhaling.
-Time-out, if the situation gets complicated you have to take a few seconds to continue with what we are doing.
- If there is possibility, take water, put a little on the arms and neck, and take a breath.
-Some people drink coffee. The sensation of hot liquid comforts them.
-Provide, organize and plan activities. Give half to our activities such as preparing breakfast.
-Regular exercise, dancing or walking. In case of having a steady partner, sexual relations are also recommended.
-Having hobbies, reading, sewing, cooking, gardening etc.
-Feel the wind in your face, smell a perfume, hear the water fall if you have a source close and if you have the luxury to listen to the sea.
-Good interpersonal skills, a good conversation with a friend is a big help.
-Meditation, yoga, relaxation techniques that are sometimes free in places close to home.
-If it is possible, a change of hairstyle, clothing, etc.
-Contact with nature. On weekend, enjoy the trees or mountains.
-Remove the emotions in a positive way. Play with family, mourn and laugh with a movie.
-Eat healthy, without abuse of fats, or alcohol, cigarettes or drugs.
-Sleeping well is very useful.
Body language
The mouth is not the only one part of our body we can use to communicate our ideas, feelings emotions, moods, etc. Our body movements can show our reactions, our thoughts, even better than words. It is very important to control these movements, but it is very difficult to do it.
The most common movements and reactions of the body are the following:
·         Tap fingers: this movements show that you are nervous, impatient, etc.
·         Frown: disbelief, confused, etc.
·         Clench your teeth: it means that you are angry.
·         Stare. It means that you are very interested in something or somebody.
·         Fold the arms: it means that you do not want to do something because you do not agree with it.
Mastering body language is extremely important. For example, when you're in a job interview, your body language may betray your insecurity or nervousness, or even if you're lying.
Sometimes the movements and reactions, and gestures of the face, speak louder than words.
Exam tips: Writing compositions
Some of the most important tips to write good compositions, not only in exams, but in any case, are the following:
·         You have to take into account who the type of person that may read your composition. Knowing who could be the reader is going to help you to choose the language, the style, the structure, and other things that will do your composition more interesting.
·          You have to know if you are writing a formal composition or an informal one in order to adapt the style and the main structure to readers.
·         The writing style is very important if you want to give a clear message to readers. Also, a good type of writing helps you to organize the ideas in the correct way so they are interesting and easy to read for the reader.
·         You should make a plan to organize the ideas in order of importance. It is going to be useful in the moment of developing them.
·         You have to take into account the requirements of the composition to logical write logical things according to the purpose of the composition.
Next, there is an example of a great composition:
When television news started out, back in the 1950’s, it occupied less than a thirty-minute slot. Ten or fifteen minutes would be granted to local stations for their news, and then the networks would say all there was to say about national and world news in the remaining fifteen to twenty minutes. There were very few advertisements during the news; it wasn't regarded as appropriate to sponsor news about floods and fires and political disasters. Life must have been simpler then.
Nowadays many television stations set apart ninety minutes for local news alone, and that's just for the early evening news show. On March 17, 1998 (St. Patrick's Day), we watched a local news show in Hartford for one hour, from 5 to 6 p.m., and kept track of what seemed to be really news and what was — well, not news.
First of all, during this one hour of news, there were 35 advertisements. Among other things advertised, there were ads for cars (sometimes competing car companies would follow nose to tailpipe), lots of pharmaceuticals (with dreadful warnings about side-effects), fast-food chains (no warnings about side effects), mutual funds, feminine hygiene products, cheese, utility companies, phone service, shampoos, and deodorants. Most of the ads were fast paced, colorful, slick, and sometimes funny. They seemed to do a lot in their thirty seconds. Graphically, they were the most interesting part of the hour. In addition, there were ten advertisements apparently produced by the television station itself that advertised programs and services of the station — sometimes featuring what was coming up later that evening, sometimes touting the virtues of the station's news team and weather forecasters.
Be going to and would
In this case we use would and be going to, to talk about predictions and intentions in the past. The structure of the sentence is in present, but the verb´s form is in past.
Grammar Going to (it is more used to talk about plans).
Pronoun + verb in past + pronoun + was/were going to be + complement
Grammar Would to (it is more used to talk about predictions).
Pronoun + verb in past + pronoun + would + verb simple form + complement
Examples:
·         I thought I was going to travel to Paris last year.
·         I believed you were going to be the winner in that competition.
·         I told him that you would be my girlfriend.
Future in the past
It is used to express the idea that in the past you thought something would happen in the future. Future in the Past has two different forms in English: "would" and "was going to." "Would" is used to volunteer or promise and "was/were going to" is used to plan.
·         I thought you were going to be more intelligent.
·         I said she would be a good friend, but now, I can see that I was wrong.
To explain in a better way the future in the past, check this example:
In the past you said:
·         I will go to USA next year.
Now, in the present you say:
·         I thought I would go to USA. (Maybe you did not go or you did).

Women in the Society

Early Attitudes Toward Women
Women have been always viewed inferior in comparison with men. In some cultures, for example Roma, women did not have rights, they were considered as unhappiness, as badness, and other bad concepts. Women were always related with bad or inferior ideas.
They were considered like objects that could be useful for men in specific situations like the conception. They had to be always with their husbands and do whatever they wanted. Women were property of men as if they were a product.
Nowadays is very clear that women are not inferior, they can achieve a lot of things, in some cases doing a better job than men.

Opinion: Women have suffered the discrimination and contempt of the society since a lot of years. Nowadays it is so clear than women have a lot of abilities and knowledge to develop important roles in the society.

The weaker sex?

It was thought that women developed the domestic chores because these were easier than the chores of men. Men´s chores required more force and ability; but women´s chores need a lot of force too. Now women are more resistant to the pain or to the sicknesses than men because of developing of those “easy” chores.
Also women have more control in some aspects like maternity and education. Women are more involved in education and they studied egress and masteries, even more than men.
Recently, some laws to protect women have been created in response to the need of creating the same conditions for women and men in the work, in the school, and in all the roles that they develop in society.

Opinion: women are capable of developing the same activities than men. Now they are more independent and have more power to decide the way in which they want to live. Women are more involved in the education; in some cases they have better results than men. It is very important to have laws that protect women because we can avoid the discrimination against them. The most important of these laws is to apply them.

The Legal Status of Women
Women did not have rights about the decisions in the family, the man was in charge of the decision and the women had to agree with him.
Little by little a lot of ideas about equity between women and men have been developed and have helped to create better conditions for women, not only with their rights, but with the decisions that they take and the independence.
Also, some laws to encourage and support women to work were created. It meant a big step for the creation of the same job opportunities. With these laws a lot of divorced, widows and separated women were benefited. But there were some restrictions yet, especially in the workday that women worked.
Opinion: women have fought a lot of time for their rights and they deserve to be independent and have better and bigger opportunities everyday. It does not matter if they are single, married, divorced or widows, they have to have the same rights.
Women at Work
Some years ago the development of the women in the profession started to grow up. At the beginning women used to work only in factories or in the housework, but some year later, women were able of working in some professions that they hadn´t done before. The most important profession was doctor. A lot of women could study medicine and work as men doctors.
Another important profession for women was teacher. They did a great job as teachers and they could cover a big part of this profession.
Even when women could work in different professions, there were some iniquities on the salaries. Women were paid with lower salaries than men.
Also women showed us that it was not necessary to get married to be successful and if they got married, they continued working.
Another right that was given to women was the license of maternity that allows them to return working when they had a baby.
Opinion: women have shown that they can develop in all kind of jobs; sometimes they do a better job than men. Nowadays, the inequities continue in some companies. We must finish with those injustices if we want to improve the society.

Women in politics
Women could vote since 1920, but the way in which they had participated in politics had been so few. Little by little we could see how women took some important posts in the government and the organisms related with it. Women like Geraldine Ferraro, Jeanette Rankin de Montana, Miriam A. Ferguson, Paciencia Sewell Latting, Frances Perkins, Eleanor Roosevelt, and others have shown that women are capable of working in the government with good results.
Every time we can see more and more women participating in the creation of laws, in the meetings with presidents, in the posts of the government, and having great results in the political campaigns.
Opinion: the work that women do to help other and to help themselves with the legislations and the creation of laws to protect rights has been so useful. They can lead institutions, states and countries because they have the abilities and intelligence to do it.

Feminist Philosophies

Some women have emphasized the role of the women creating documents like “The Declaration of the rights of the woman” or writing articles like “'Woman in the Nineteenth Century” explaining with arguments the importance of women in society.
Another article like “women and economy” describes the way in which women participate in the economy of home.
Also, women have been part of a political party called “Socialist labor party” in which women had an important participation with ideas and work.
Another aspect in which women have been is the media and the press.
Those are the feminist philosophies that have been considered like the end of the traditional home in some cases, but the truth is that the model of the typical family has been modified by other reasons.
Opinion: Feminist philosophies help to emphasize the importance of women in society , but it is very important to keep prudence with these philosophies in order to avoid a phenomenon like feminism.

Women in Reform Movements
The contribution of women to some movements and reforms has been so important. Some women have supported movements and protest against slavery, poverty and agriculture, achieving great changes in favor of the equity and justice.
Women have also participated in some legislation of issues like birthrate and   the right to vote. They have done a very good job and have leaded important reforms and ideologies.
Opinion: women can be capable of moving people and influences to achieve good things and this is one of the main reasons that let them be important now.

Fighting for the Vote

In the first meeting to try to achieve that women could vote, there were a lot foe posed arguments that showed that women had to be given with the same rights than men.
Women were discriminated and they could not vote. Even, the right to vote was given at first to black people, but it was not granted to women.
The process of achieving the right to vote for women was a very slowly process. A lot of women fought to have this right. The proposal was presented to the curt so many times but it was rejected.
Opinion: Women have the right to decide the important things about a country, even they have the right to work on the government and particpate actively on it.
